Convert M4A to WAV — Without Uploading Anything
Need your M4A as a WAV? WAV is useful for audio editing and music production and DAWs. Create a working copy in your browser, then open it in the app that needs it. Keep your original M4A too.
Many converters ask you to send a recording to their server before they can do any work. Crikk reads your local file and runs the audio engine on your device. You skip the upload, and the sound stays with you. You can make another copy with different settings whenever you need one.
How to Convert M4A to WAV
- Step 1
Add your M4A files
Drop your files on the page or use Choose Files. You can add several recordings at once. A M4A page accepts other supported formats too; each row shows what was actually detected.
- Step 2
Check the output format
WAV starts selected. Choose another format if your plans change, then open Advanced for bitrate, sample rate or channel settings. Leave the defaults to preserve source settings where possible.
- Step 3
Convert and download
Click Convert. Files finish one at a time so several encoders do not compete for memory. A single result downloads automatically. For a batch, download individual files or save the completed results together as a ZIP.
M4A vs WAV: What's the Difference?
| Feature | M4A | WAV |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | MPEG-4 Audio | Waveform Audio File Format |
| Type | Lossy | Lossless |
| Sound quality | Great — better than MP3 at the same size | Perfect, uncompressed sound |
| File size | Small — about 1–2 MB per minute | Large — about 10 MB per minute |
| Plays on | Great on Apple devices, works on most others | Plays on almost everything, but files are big |
| Best for | iPhone and Mac, Apple Music, voice memos | audio editing, music production and DAWs, voiceover delivery |
Will Converting M4A to WAV Affect Quality?
Your WAV keeps the decoded sound from the M4A, within the output bit depth and sample rate you choose. It cannot restore detail removed when the M4A was made. A lossless working format avoids another lossy encoding step when an editor saves your work. Raising the sample rate alone does not improve the recording.
Will My File Get Bigger or Smaller?
WAV is usually about 5 times bigger than M4A. A lossless format stores more of the decoded signal instead of using the same kind of lossy compression. A bigger file does not mean that missing detail has returned.
As a rough guide, a 5 MB M4A could become about 26 MB as WAV. Duration, channels, sample rate and bitrate all affect the result, so this is an estimate.
When to Use WAV
- audio editing. Open your audio in an editor without another lossy conversion.
- music production and DAWs. Bring the file into a digital audio workstation.
- voiceover delivery. Deliver a recording in a widely accepted editing format.
- mastering. Keep a full-size working file for the next stage.
- archiving recordings. Save a recording without discarding more audio detail.
Before choosing WAV, check what the receiving app or player accepts. Plays on almost everything, but files are big. Windows Media Player, Apple Music, QuickTime, VLC, Audacity, and any audio editor are common ways to open this format. Keep the original recording until you have played the result and confirmed that it fits your project.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will converting M4A to WAV improve the sound?
No. It cannot bring back missing detail. It creates a file in the format your next app or editing workflow needs.
Why is my WAV bigger?
WAV stores audio differently from M4A. Extra space comes from the output representation, rather than newly recovered sound.
Why convert M4A to WAV?
Your editor, production app or client may ask for WAV. A lossless working file also avoids repeatedly encoding your edits into M4A.
Is this M4A to WAV converter free?
Yes. It is free to use with no sign-up, watermark or daily conversion limit.
Do you upload my M4A file?
No. The file is read and processed by your browser on your device. The conversion tool does not send audio or file names to a server.
Does it work without internet?
The tool can cache the current page and its audio engine when service workers are available. Offline availability depends on your browser cache. Open the page online first; browser storage cleanup can remove cached files.
Can I convert several M4A files?
Yes. Add a batch and convert it one file at a time. Each result has a download button. Multiple finished files can also be saved together in a ZIP.
Is there a file size limit?
There is no server upload limit because your files stay local. Very large files still depend on device memory, and output files are held in your browser. A computer is a better choice for long recordings.
Does it work on phones?
A browser with the required audio features can run the tool. Codec support varies by device. Unavailable output formats are disabled, and an error row explains when the selected file cannot be decoded.
Can I choose something other than WAV?
Yes. The page starts with WAV, but the output dropdown stays editable. Changing it updates this session without navigating to another page.
